This is a line proof taken after the first etch for an etching which was going to be a winter day scene. However, it evolved into a winter night image with a full moon.

This is a line proof taken after the first etch for an etching which was going to be a winter day scene. However, it evolved into a winter night image with a full moon. In the line proof, you can see faint lines, indicating where I would add shadows in the snow with the aquatint process. Many years later I did an oil painting of this subject, but instead of the night time, making it a daytime winter scene titled Winter Day. That can be seen in the Four Seasons Giclee print section of New England.

The inspiration for this watercolor etching was our 150-year-old farmhouse and barn. I have fond memories of living there and on sunny mornings after a heavy snowfall, going for long walks across the open fields into the woods.
